Area of Education

Today's schools are challenged as never before. Faced with increasingly diverse student bodies and phenomenal technological change, contemporary schools struggle to provide quality services for all students. These students need teachers who are committed to excellence in the classroom and to Jesus Christ. It is our belief that educators prepared in such a way will make a difference in the school and communities where they live and serve.

Here's why you should consider Milligan's teacher education program:

  • Student-centered faculty and advisors -- we know you!
  • Hundreds of successful graduates in local schools and throughout the country
  • Excellent reputation in the area -- schools seek our students and graduates
  • Highly qualified faculty -- all full-time faculty have doctorates, as well as experience as teachers and school administrators
  • Field experience begins immediately
  • You'll spend an entire semester working side-by-side with an experienced teacher in a classroom and be mentored by a Milligan College faculty member
  • Numerous and varied programs on the undergraduate and graduate levels
  • Assistance with placement
  • Assistance with financial aid
  • Accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) and fully approved by the Tennessee Department of Education

Field Experience
Teacher candidates complete supervised field experiences and student teaching in public and private partner schools in nearby communities. During the senior year, students complete a full-time student teaching experience and participate in a series of associated capstone seminars especially designed to provide opportunities to reflect on relationships between theory and practical experiences in education.

Faculty
The Milligan College teacher education faculty seek to nurture and develop caring and reflective teachers, those who reflect continually on their practice in search of excellence, and who care deeply about the students and families they serve. Knowing that every child deserves a quality teacher, Milligan is committed to developing in its teacher education candidates the professional knowledge, skills, and dispositions required to succeed in contemporary schools.

Accreditation
Fully approved by the Tennessee Department of Education, our program is also accredited by NCATE, the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (2010 Massachusetts Ave., NW, Washington, DC 20036; 202.466.7496). NCATE accreditation means your degree from Milligan is instantly recognized in Tennessee and the nation for its quality. Milligan’s commitment to meet NCATE quality standards means we take great care in seeing that you gain the knowledge, skills, and dispositions needed for success as a professional educator.

Our Graduates
Our graduates in teacher education are highly successful in teaching and other disciplines. Education graduates are serving as teachers, school administrators, guidance counselors, and many go on to obtain master's and doctoral degrees.

Master of Education (M.Ed.)
In addition to its undergraduate program, Milligan also offers a Master of Education (M.Ed.) program for those whose undergraduate degree is not necessarily in education. The program allows you to complete your master’s degree and teacher licensure requirements in as little as 15 months. Milligan also offers an M.Ed. (Advanced) for those seeking professional development. For more information, call 800.262.8337.
