Campus Safety & Security

Maintaining a safe campus

The Milligan College campus is a very safe campus and maintaining a secure campus environment is a college priority. The college continually evaluates and looks for new and improved security methods. In recent years Milligan has provided better lighting across campus, installed security cameras in key areas, changed locks and keys, and upgraded campus security procedures.

The Student Handbook provides full policies and procedures for campus security and student conduct guidelines. The college contracts with a professional guard service to provide after-hours security. These individuals conduct inspections of campus buildings and patrol the campus throughout the night.

Occupants of the residence halls are issued keys which access the main lobby door and the individual room. All residents must be prepared to provide proper identification upon request of college personnel. During new student orientation, crime prevention is addressed through a review of precautions necessary to provide for one's personal safety and well-being. Residence hall programs also cover the topic of crime prevention as it relates to campus housing and safety procedures.

Campus security is everyone's responsibility, and it is necessary to maintain sound and sensible precautions. It is therefore important for members of the college community to report any and all questionable incidents. Crimes which occur on campus are to be reported to the Director of Campus Security, whose office is located in the McMahan Student Center. An Incident Report form detailing the facts surrounding the crime will be completed and the appropriate response will be taken according to the college's security policies and procedures, detailed in the Student Handbook.

In cases involving violation of local, state, or federal laws, the Elizabethton City Police are notified for appropriate follow-up. The college cooperates fully with any investigations conducted by proper authorities. In the event of a crime that poses a threat to the campus community, notice is made through the college's email system and announcement sheet.

In accordance with the Tennessee College and University Security Information Act of 1989, the Federal Student Right to Know and Campus Security Act of 1990, and the Federal Drug-Free Schools and Communities Act, the college provides an annual Milligan College Security and Crime Report. This report is available here for download or upon request from the Office of Student Development at 423.461.8760.

Parents and students now also can review campus crime statistics for colleges and university campuses at http://ope.ed.gov/security/.

Milligan College Emergency Information

As part of the college's efforts to continue to enhance safety efforts on campus, the college has implemented an emergency notification system in coordination with JYNGLE. This system is provided to the Milligan community and will be used only to provide emergency notification through a text and/or voice notice.
